Turtle Back Zoo (560 Northfield Ave, West Orange, NJ 07052) is Essex County's zoo — 30 acres in South Mountain Reservation, home to more than 200 species including sea lions, red pandas, a reptile house, and an Essex Skytrek aerial adventure course. The zoo is one of the most popular school field-trip destinations in northern New Jersey, and the main parking lot off Northfield Avenue handles buses in the designated oversized-vehicle section at the north end of the lot. Self-guided and guided group visits both require advance reservation, and weekend days from May through September routinely see full lots by 11 a.m.
